Step it up a notch this Father’s Day
Many shrewd observers have detailed the transition of Father’s Day from a day of recognizing father’s for their great efforts in bringing up their children and their efforts to a wider society, to a symbol of consumerism rivaling that of Valentine’s Day. They reason that the day is just another excuse for companies to peddle over priced glossy cards and subpar gifts to foolish consumers. When the holiday started it was sincere, however with the increase of large companies monopolizing gift giving many fathers end up with same gift as everyone else; whatever shoddy merchandise has accidentally found itself at the head of the supermarket isle. Like mothers, fathers like to feel valued and unique, with promotion of this 100 year old holiday heavier than ever their expectations are at an all time high.
For the less distinguished fathers there are alternative gifts which still show more care and initiative than the fodder which will be at every super market in the next couple of weeks. There are a host of gadgets and gizmos online which are sure to impress fathers as well as making their lives easier.
The AK47 automatic water pistol:
This weapon of mass drenching can relight the child inside of every man.
The Luminbrella:
The Luminbrella keeps the rain away and serves as useful torch. The shape and weight of the item allows it to double up as an effective weapon (for self defense).
Wild Sling Solo – One Man Water Balloon Launcher:
Dads can have the time of their lives firing water balloons at their friends, family and random passersby.
After reading about these weird and wonderful gifts, it can safely be said that these cynical observers have been premature in writing off this holiday which can still generate joy in millions of fathers across the world. There are still gifts out there which represent the traditional family values in this much maligned holiday, rather than those predictable supermarket items.
A quality shirt for work can make Dad happy as it is serves a purpose. Many Dads out there are unable to function without a sturdy caffeine boost every morning. This is why coffee is a present with a function, as well as a refreshingly different approach to gift giving which will surprise and delight him. Perhaps the most important element of gift giving is the expression of feelings rather than its functionality. Although coffee serves functions which many people see as essential to getting through their day, more importantly fathers will recognize the thoughtfulness which has gone into buying such a gift.
